Work Schedule

Timescale

For any kind of project a detailed plan has to be decided upon so that all involved know where the project should be and where it is heading at any particular time.  The schedule below was thoroughly discussed with all major deadlines being taken into account.  From this a project programme was created using Microsoft Project 2002.

Research Plan

Further Literature Review

Risk and risk analysis: What risk analysis techniques are undertaken by a company before tendering for a project and what affect has this on their approach to health and safety?  This further research aims to highlight how seriously firms take their health and safety procedures and the techniques they employ both before the project begins and during the project.

In-depth research has to be carried out into recent fatalities, to determine the reasons for these incidents and to highlight avoidance measures.  From this investigation any casual factors in accidents will be noted, with a view to the prevention, or reduction in the incidence, of accidents by improved health and safety culture.

An attempt will be made to measure the affect on the cost of health and safety measures for a business undertaking a project.  Hopefully a link can be established between lowering costs and improving health and safety, so that the industry as a whole would be encouraged to improve its health and safety culture.  Doing this it is hoped will encourage businesses in both aspects of the industry to adopt a health and safety culture more readily.

Questionnaire

A small study into the design and composition of a questionnaire has already started and a formal questionnaire will be developed over the coming weeks.  This will then be distributed to designers and contractors alike with the aim being that results from this will allow conclusions to be drawn in regards to the overall cultural state within the industry.  Statistical analysis will be investigated and applied to the results so to help gain accurate conclusions.  The questionnaire will be completely anonymous, allowing recipients to answer as honestly as possible.

If time allows, in addition to the questionnaire a series of formal interviews will take place.  These will be with professionals already in the industry, both contractors and designers, and will hopefully give a more detailed and extensive insight into the culture of their businesses.

International Study

Following interest shown by a major multi-national company in the thesis topic, it is hoped to provide some information on Health and Safety Culture on a global scale.  To undertake such a task will require the investigation of international legislation on health and safety, in conjunction with further field research into the topic.  It is hoped that through co-operation with this multi-national company, the UK can be compared to other countries in regards to this topic.
